Attempted Runner.

Challeneges make me a better person.

This morning I thought I would do something different than just wake up and get ready for work. I have three alarms set every morning.
5:00am is the first alarm for A that allows for a snooze.
5:15 is A’s get up and take a shower alarm.
5:32 is my alarm for me to get up.
I’m usually up at the 5:15 alarm. Well, not up but more of a just lay there up. So, I thought that maybe I can get up at 5 and run to beat the heat, since it’s another 100℉ day.
I was to run 4 miles, but after LadyCrasher ruined me on Saturday and still feeling it a wee bit, I decided I would take it easy and do 2.5miles.

Well, 5:00 rolls around and I didn’t get up. 5:15, didn’t get up then either. My morning run was out of the question.

Fast forward to after work. I get my three new Under Armour tanks. I have 13 now, I think.
Side note: These are the best tank tops ever. Maybe I’ll review them later.  Since I again, was feeling motivated I figure I’d do my run while I still had it in me to run. I wasn’t going to go outside though so I did the next best thing.

I played McGyver.

I took the new 24′ fan that A bought and stratigcally placed it in a chair behind the treadmill on high. I grabbed the body wrap thing that has a pocket for a heat pack that allows you to velcro the heatpad around your waist for lower back pain. I’ll tell you what….slip an ice pack in that there fancy contraption and you get instant 10 degrees cooler.
Add in a cold my wet wash cloth, and game, set. March.

Wet towel + jumbo size ice pack x giant fan on a nice easy 2.5 mile treadmill run divided by a hot room (it’s 100 outside but 90 in the house) and carry the two

Equals boom!!! Sweaty but no embarrassing red face!!!!!

I look high, but I swear I'm not.

Now, moving all along to dinner time.

I did Juneathon very well. That was the most excercise I have done since I was in elementary school. Oh, to be young again. Anyway, since I did so well I thought I’d give myself another challenge. I’ll come up with a name cause julyathon just doesn’t have a nice ring to it. I’ve decided to go back to managing my food.

I know I’ve wrote blog entries before about having a buttload of nachos and still loosing a pound..I did. It happened..but then I’d gain it back. All to repeat that cycle. As some know, I use to be 212. Yep, I said it. I ended up loosing 50-55 pounds. It’s now seven months since I lost that and the scale hasn’t moved any less. I’m like permastuck between 158.9 on a good day to 161.8. I tracked calories and 90% of the time I was within 1200-1500. No change in weight.
Maybe it was the lack of excercise from being out for 6 months because of the hip issue. Juneathon rolls around and I did something active on 27 of the 30 days. Same calories…maybe added a few depending on my activity. Logically you would thing increase excercise and 1200-1500 cals somethings gotta change. Well it didnt. I’ve been getting these damn messages for weeks from myfitnesspal.com…but theyre all lies.

image

Seriously, one notification said 154. The next 151. Every number under 159.8 but have I seen that? Nope.

Perhaps my problem was that I got comfortable in the 1200-1500 cal mark and stopped tracking as much. Sometimes I wouldn’t count a few peices of insert whatever food you want here, or “eyeball” those meausrements/portion sizes. And when they say, “eat all the fruits and vegetables you want!” did that really mean eat everything!!!!!!! Note: not really eat everything, I just threw that inside joke in for my sis.

Now, I’m not trying to be one of those people who obsess over weight because once I lost the 50, I was good. I also thought I was 5’9 but that’s a whole other story that I blogged while back. Anyway, I don’t really obsess over the scale because isn’t it obvious, since 7 months passed and I haven’t cared too much up until now? It’s just that when you are soooooooo F’ing (excuse my alphabetting) close (my goal is 147-152) but things never change….I get frustrated.

So, what else can I do? I’m doing the Nike half women’s marathon training guide, so I’m doing some sort of physical acitivty for 30+ minutes (Im in week 4 of 12 and it’s just moved to the 45 minute workout programs and longer runs are coming up) and I’m still eating within my calories, but now I won’t be so lenient on the portions.

So what’s my weight-be-gone challenge?
To loose at least 5 pounds by the end of July. That’s not unreasonable is it? Loose 5 pounds in a month? It can be done, and then some.

I lost track where I was going with this, so I’ll just end it now.

Got any tips and (healthy) tricks for me?

#Juneathon 29 – 1,338 burritos and a broken butt.

Happy “Long” Run Day! As you may or may not know, or care…I had a scheduled 3.5 long run to do today. So, I woke up at 5:30 and got ready. I spent a long time in the shower because I planned to wear shorts. I had to make sure I shaved my legs properly. For those that do not know what properly is…it means above the knee. hahaha Girls will know what I’m talking about.

Hopefully.

Anywho, after getting dressed I still had an hour to kill before going to meet up with my sister. I made breakfast to power me up for the run. I’m telling you, Glutino’s English Muffins are great! That paired with Turkey Sausages and eggs….Mmmm. Tasty. As I ate my breakfast, I slapped on some KT Tape and then headed out the door. IN SHORTS! I don’t usually wear shorts, but since it was suppose to get to 100 degrees (highest for our run, I think may have been 86-88) I made an executive decision. Boy, was I glad for that decision. I even wore short ankle socks, rather than ProCompression socks.

KT Tape, second breakfast of Champions.

We arrive at Fleet Feet and no one is around. We started to think that maybe everyone else already took off to beat the heat, but soon enough people (not as many as last week) showed up. We all finally began our run and my sister and I ended up being in the back. Only because we were dilly-dallying.

And slow.

As we reached the first crosswalk and waiting for the little man to tell us it was safe to proceed across said crosswalk, a lady reaches us and asks what our normal running pace is. One look at her and I said…SLOW! She volunteered herself to run with us because she had to take it easy since she’s coming back from a calf injury. We were nice and let her run with us but towards the mile marker, I was getting nervous. I wanted to take a small walking break but I didn’t really want to be that person that slows everyone down so I kept up. Until finally, I was like…SCREW YOU! I’m walking! My sister and Lady, were fine with it and walked. Drank some water. Walked some more until she we started running again.  Towards the last mile, I was slowing down a lot. My sister kept up with the lady (who normally JOGS a normal 8min pace) so good for my sister! I was still going, but my 10:48 (New record for fastest mile!) turned into a 12:13 (mile two), which then turned into 13:34 (third mile) and then finally I couldn’t do it anymore. I ended up dropping back to my “comfort” slow pace of 15:08. To be exact. I even started walking and told them to go ahead and I’ll meet them back at the store since it was only a 1/2 mile left.

I wasn’t as tired as I was last week, but I stopped to walk the rest of the way only because my head was getting fuzzy and my groin started to ache. Then I got worried. Not because I potentially could have passed out because of heat exhaustion or anything, but because I was getting that groin pain. That of which I felt around mile 6-9 at my half (just not AS intense) and before my injury at mile 11. No…not worried. I got scared. I felt that because I tried my best to keep up with Lady, I pushed too hard for my third ever long run, in 6 months.  Overall, I finished 3.5 miles in 44:11.

Just in case you want to walk 3.5 miles, in my footsteps...Here ya go.

Just in case you want to walk 3.5 miles, in my footsteps…Here ya go.

Although, statistically I did better this week (went .10 farther and about 3 minutes faster)…mentally and physically I felt I did better last week. Hopefully next week, I won’t have a running partner who I have to try and prove myself to. My sister doesn’t care what I run, even though sometimes I feel bad because I slow her down. ::::shrugs::: Sorry, J.

We got back to Fleet Feet and they had some ice cold Nuun. I drank a bunch of that and did some stretches hoping that it would help my groin ache to go away. I’ll get the ice pack out later. It’ll be a two in one deal. Ice for my back but also ice for the (as of now) 103* temp!!!!

Fleet Feet PLS

Then, I think I broke my butt.

Hahhahahaah. No, I got a twinge of pain just below and to the left of my spine. That kind of pain, when you sleep wrong and you get that crick in your neck that won’t go away and hurts when you move a certain way. It was that same pain, just in above my butt.  Shrugged it off and went on our merry way. Shopped around a bit at Michael’s Craft store (got my foam for a duck hat), Sports Authority (more KT tape and Pay Days ), LUNCH! (Chipotle! DUDE!! They are having a game in a few weeks where the grand prize winner will win a gift card with $9,100. THAT’S ROUGHLY 1,338 bowls….OF COURSE I SIGNED UP TO PARTICIPATE! I LOVE CHIPTOLE!), went to Target for one two things, then REI for The Travel size Stick.

Once I got home I rolled/sticked and my broken butt is feeling a little better, so that’s good.

Now, my Juneathon has come to an end. I know there is technically one more day left, but that is my scheduled rest day and I plan to take full advantage of that.

The only downside is, you won’t have the pleasure of reading a daily blog post from me…but who knows. I might surprise you!

#juneathon 28 – Stretch like an Egyptian.

image

’nuff said.

Goodnight.

Hahahahhaa jk.

I was so happy that my NTC program had me scehduled to do either yoga or the 15 minute Kara Goucher stretching program. They are the easy activites.

I plopped my butt on the floor right smack dab infront of the AC and got my stretch on. My legs feel all loose now. Don’t know if it’s because I got Goucher power or because I’ve been stretching all day. Here was me earlier at work.

image

It’s like I’m doing the lying quad stretch except I’m not laying on the floor. Even though we tend to do that more often than not. Today, K brought out her foam roller. I think I just sat there watching her wince in pleasure for about 15 minutes. I did make a point to tell her it was very entertaining.

Got my group run tomorrow and I’m going to be prepared for the heat. The weather says it’s going to be 72℉ to 78℉ during the time well be on route, but if PLS is anything like WCR, that means the real feel will be high 80s. I’ll bring a wet wash cloth, four water bottles, two with ice. I’ll wear my UA victory heat gear tank and even make everyone jealous and show of my whiteness by blinding everyone because my legs haven’t seen the sun in probably 21 years. I even thought about not wearing my Pro Compression socks tomorrow but I will.  Once we trek it to the top of the hill, I’ll roll them down. So it’s not like I’ll be blinding everyone the entire time. Even thought about icepacks in my bra and undies but thought that would be a little much. My hope is that I majorly over prepare for the heat and then it ends up snowing.

#juneathon 27 – I couldn’t beat the heat.

It’s day’s like today that make me thankful there is only a few more days left for Juneathon.

I just wasn’t feeling it today. It was hot (91 by ny workout time) and just dry. I had my fan and shorts on but doing interval circuit style NTC workout from hell, doesn’t help me cool down. I was so hot, even my shins were sweating.

I didn’t know shins can sweat.
Splint, yes.
Sweat, no.

I couldn’t do my workout full bore. My jump squats turned into deadlifts. My froggers turned into planks. My 1 minute intervals, turned into 45 seconds. I opted for the easy way out on most of the moves. I wanted it to be over.
Badly.
I did most of what I could within the 30mins. I then was suppose to do another 15 min. Workout but looking at the routine, I realized I had nothing left. Not even a care to want to do it and do it with at least a little bit of effort. I opted for the 15 min, Shawn Johnson stretch program. That heled me cool down but the shower I took afterwords was heaven.

Despite this wretched heat…how many times must I say how much I loathe the heat….I hope I don’t have this attitude on Saturday for my scheduled long run (3.66 miles). It’s suppose to be 99℉.

#juneathon 25 – Squats and pizza.

My NTC workouts are getting tough. My squats and push ups are getting better though. Except my legs don’t want to work for the following ten minutes post workout. I loathe squats. Apparently they’ll make my groin muscles fanstastic which will help my bursitis and blahblahblah, so squats…are a must.

And glutino’s GF English muffin pizzas are pretty decent for last minute pizza dough.

#Juneathon 24 – Woe is me….I’m so compressed.

It’s summer time….and it’s raining. I was going to run outside today but didn’t want to get my shoes wet in case I need to return them. I’m fairly sure I won’t have to and that they are my new best friends, but I rather wait til I’m most positive before sloushing through puddles.
So, since I didn’t take my happy feet outside I decided to test out my compression shorts I got for my RunDisney 10k outfit. I don’t typically wear shorts because of the whole chafing issue , and thus the reason for the test drive. After 6.2 miles, I want to make sure I’m comfy. Shoot, after 1 mile I want to make sure I’m comfy. I tried first with just the white compression shorts for the first 3/4s mile then to see what they were like with other shorts over because I won’t go out in tight fitting shorts.

image

Under Armour compression shorts

Left over KT tape still works. I make surr I get my money’s worth in each strip.

image

They did the job. Moved slightly but settled into place. With the running shorts over, if I wear them a little higher up they won’t get sucked into my crotch area. 😀

Oh and a lesson for the day, flaming hot cheetos are not pre race snack foods. I wanted to vomit the whole 1.5 miles. Thank goodness NTC only had me do 1.5 today.

Lesson learned.

Juneathon 22 – Summer Runnin’, Had me a blast!

I went to Fleet Feet Sports in Pleasanton today to participate in one of their weekly runs. They have a few different routes to take depending on the mileage that you want to do; 3.66, 4.somethhing, 5.something and 7.something. Since NTC had me scheduled for one of my first long runs today (3 miles), my sister and I opted for the 3.66 mile Happy Valley Route. We both figured that if things start to hurt, we’ll just turn around and go back to cut it short. This was out first time doing a group run, so we weren’t really sure what to expect or do. We just figured we would get lost somewhere cause everyone would take off since they’re at lot faster than us. The owner and coordinator, was really nice and told us what we do. She basically told us to pretty much do whatever we wanted; which route, how fast, running/walking…cause no one else cares. I liked that motto.

So, we start off and kept pace with most of the people (who before the start were talking about colonoscopies and elite running times). Once we passed the two stop lights before reaching another one, those Colonoscopers took off. My sister and I, just continued to do our own thing like the lady told us to do. There was one guy behind us for a bit that we chatted with. He reminds me of a hippy and just la-de-da, not a care in the world kind-a-guy. He was also the one guy that was encouraging me along when I did the Boston Tribute Run. So, I already like Hippy.

As we’re running down one of the busiest streets in downtown, I didn’t really care that people saw me (Shocked? I was). I just went. I normally keep my phone in my hydration belt when I run, but since this wasn’t a marked out course I took the little sheet of paper with the course directions on it and put it underneath my cellphone cover (my cellphone cover is a clear argyle, so I was able to see the directions pretty easily). You know what running with a cellphone in hand means?

PHOTOS ON THE RUN!!

First stop….Cemetery. I ran passed it because this was only about 1/2 mile in and I didn’t feel liking dying yet. Save that for the latter part of the run.

Ghost in a graveyard, run, ruN, RUN!

We passed a water fountain….or exploding fire hydrant perhaps, we really were to far away to tell. Whatever it was, casted a lovely rainbow glow. Are those considered Rainglows?

Rainbow in the water.

I slowed down a little shortly after this because there was a hill. I think I’ve expressed my hated of hills many of times, so I won’t get into it now. Walked up the hill, ran a little more, walked up another hill…it was getting hotter and…

OH DEER!

A doe. A Deer. A female Deer….something about Tropic golden suns.

The last thing before getting back onto the busy road was the house that had Grapevines rather than a yard.

Want some Wine to go with that run?

As we’re finished up the last .66 miles, I realize that I FINALLY REACHED MY GOAL OF RUNNING A 5K UNDER 40 MINUTES.

Your Slow is my new fast!

I’ve been trying forever to reach it and I finally did! Your slow may be my fast, but I don’t care. I FINALLY GOT UNDER 40!!! Which means I set a PR by 1:29 from the last! It can only get better from here right?

Check out my swag; New Balance, ProCompression, Garmin, KT Tape (not visible), Target C9 pants, C9 RUNderwears/RUNderbra (not visible either), Under Armour Shirt.

I’m not sure if I finally got under 40, because of my new shoes (New Balance 860v3), because of my ProCompression socks, my Garmin that makes me run more, my KT Tape helping the blood flow, the Nike Training Club (NTC) Program I’ve been doing, or just the simple fact that I just awesomed all over the place (Thanks KMD for that reference) today.

After the run, I drank some Nuun – which btw, is a LOT better cold than it is warm…and headed over to the Under Armour Outlet. I’ve been wanting to go there since it opened, almost a year ago now. I think that now that I went…I should stay home.  I only bought 3 shirts (in my defense, once was on clearance with an extra 20% off, so it was really like I bought 2 and got 1 free). However, in the overall scheme (the spelling of that looks funny) of things, having the outlet so close will make my obsession for the Under Armour Victory Tank grow even more.

I have 8 out of 16, but I’m sure there are more colors coming eventually.

After we skipped out joyfully from UA, we went to Nike (not as much fun) and the New Balance Store (didn’t need any shoes, just wanted to look). I drove over to Dick’s sporting goods to show my sister their HUGE running clothes selection. This is probably another store that I wish I never went too, because they’ll be opening one less than a mile away from my house. There goes my paycheck.

Naturally, we got lunch. We earned it right? Comparing my Garmin calories, to my intake of calories from MyFitnessPal, I burned all my breakfast calories during the run, so I was pretty hungry. We went to Erik’s deli and I got the Rio Grande Club (Turkey, bacon, guacamole) on Gluten Free bread and a salad. Well, not really a salad. It was more just lettuce and two tomatoes. Said farewell to my sister after eating and here I am now… I rushed home, so I can do my Juneathon 22 post about HOW I FINALLY GOT UNDER 40 MINUTES!

#juneathon 21 – What’s this Hatha do with anything?

Mom got the Element, themind&bodyexperience, Hatha & Flow Yoga for beginners DVD for Christmas from one of her coworkers. She never would use it, so I took it from her.

Hatha & Flow Yoga For Beginners

I’ve done this video a few times, both the Hatha and the flow portions and its alright. But tonight, it was amazing! I did the Hatha portion of it and I think its just what I needed. After this weeks workouts, I’ve been so sore and somewhat stiff…This video helped me loosen up a bit.

Like I said, just what I needed because I decided to join my sister tomorrow for a group run that is put on by one of our local running stores. Part of me, says WHAT THE HECK! I CAN’T KEEP UP WITH THEM! But then another part of me says….My training says I have to do 3 miles, so why not do it with my sister…even though sometimes, I can’t keep up with her either.

I guess I’m just really slow.

So, I’m off to bed, finishing day 21 of Juneathon (that went by fast!!) and so I’ll be nice and refreshed for day 22.

#Juneathon 20 – Spring into Summer.

Today is the last day of Spring. When I wake up it’ll be Summer. My last Spring time activities included the 30 minute NTC, Fighter Fit or something of the sort. It was sweat inducing…..it was also buttcramp creating. I did that workout, made dinner (cracked peppercorn Tri tip, sweet sweet mesquite black beans and broccolli with [nacho] cheese). After dinner settled, I was forced into making A cookies. I made his favorite that he eats, like I eat nacho cheese (dont judge me. I can’t help it…it’s my kryptonite).

image

Gluten Free white chocolate and cranberry crumble cookies.

I call them crumble cookies, because I am not a baker and cannot figure it out. Every time I have made them, except once, they come out perfect but them flatten out and crumble to the touch. Yet, A still eats them like he is Cookie Monster.

Then I ran one mile. To make up for Tuesday. I was suppose to do two, but I didn’t want to over do it and I’m tired. One mile is better than no mile.

Lastly, I used the stick of death.
image

It’s cousins to my foam roller from hell. I have a love-hate relationship with him too. He hurts so much but feels soooo good. It helped with that previously mentioned buttcramp too. 🙂

And now, as I lay here in bed, my favorite part of the day is here…..my bedtime.

Sleep tight!

#Juneathon 19 – Please Sir, Can I have S’more?

I didn’t double my exercise like I planned. Today was the first time my nike app had me use weights. Made me realize how much of a weakling I am.
I used A’s weights….well, just the bar anyway. The scale said they were 3.6 pounds each.
I did the first set and it was fine. The second set my arms started to shake. The third set I got through but didn’t do as many reps cause I got jello arm syndrom. I’m not shocked though. I’ve known my arms are the weakest. I was then going to run my two miles that I was suppose to do, but after dinner while letting my food digest I started playing a game. Got completely caught up into it. Next thing I knew, I completed all 10 levels of the game and it was 9pm. So….I suck at promised run, but at least I did some sort of exercise today.

I’ll try again tomorrow to do two times the exercise to make up for Tuesday.

In better news…my breakfast was sooooo good this morning. Breakfast Peanut Butter banana S’mores.
I used Gluten free Schar graham crackers, natural Skippy peanut butter and Chiquita organic bananas.
